The Kinetix 5500 has highly configurable power sharing options to best fit your application, cabinet space, and your budget.  There are some important notes to start with:

  • Shared-bus configurations must use the shared-bus connection system and cannot use discrete wires.

  • Shared 24VDC control power must be used for all shared bus configurations

  • Must use 3 phase 240V or 480V power.

  • The maximum number of drives in any bus power sharing group is 8.

  • It’s best to use Motion Analyzer or your local Motion Control Solution Consultant to make sure your configured Shared Power configuration will work for your system.


Standalone Drive

For a standalone drive, all the necessary power connectors are included with the drive.  For sizing the line filter and current protection, see the charts to the right.


Shared DC

In a shared DC configuration, the lead drive (leftmost) must be the largest (or tied) drive in the shared power system.  This drive will convert AC to DC for all the following drives so the lead drive must be large enough to convert enough kW for all the motors on the system.

  • All drives will share their shunts and regenerated power.
  • Must share DC 24V control power as well
  • Lead drive will be configured as AC/DC sharing and following drives will be configured as DC sharing only in Logix
  • Use Motion Analyzer to make sure the lead drive can convert enough electricity for all of the following drives.
  • Use connector 2198-H040-ADP-IN for first drive (if using H070 drive, use the 2198-H070-ADP-IN)
  • Use connector set 2198-H040-DP-T for all following drives (if using H070 drive, use the 2198-H070-DP-T)
  • Base power conditioning off of first drive (see charts to the right)

Shared AC/DC hybrid

In a shared AC/DC configuration, all drives sharing AC power must be the same size and their total converter ability is derated by 30% and must be enough for the motor load for all motors in the system.  For example, two H040s sharing the AC converting load would be able to handle 8.4kW*3*0.7=17.64kW of motor load from those three drives and the following drives sharing just DC.

  • All drives will share their shunts and regenerated power.
  • Must share DC 24V control power as well
  • Lead drives will be configured as AC/DC sharing and following drives will be configured as DC sharing only in Logix
  • Use Motion Analyzer to make sure the lead drives can convert enough electricity for all of the following drives.
  • Use connector 2198-H040-ADP-IN for first drive (if using H070 drive, use the 2198-H070-ADP-IN)
  • Use connector set 2198-H040-ADP-T for all following AC converting drives (if using H070 drive, use the 2198-H070-ADP-T)
  • Use connector set 2198-H040-DP-T for all following drives that aren’t converting AC power (if using H070 drive, use the 2198-H070-DP-T)
  • Line Filter and CB sizing is based off of the sum of the rms incoming current into the AC Sharing drives (see charts 9 and 10 to the left for CB and fuses).
  • Number of Shared AC/DC drives for given sizes can’t exceed the number shown in table 9 and 10 (right) and the number of following DC sharing drives can’t exceed the numbers shown in table 85 (right)

All drives in a configuration can be configured for shared AC/DC with no follower drives, but it will follow the same rules for number of AC/DC sharing drives.


Shared AC

In a shared AC system, the AC power comes into the left most drive but is shared with each successive drive, converting its own power.

  • Drives are configured in Logix as standalone drives.
  • All drives must be the same size
  • Drives must share 24V DC control power
  • Number of axes sharing AC power is limited to table 84 to the right
  • Use connector 2198-H040-ADP-IN for first drive (if using H070 drive, use the 2198-H070-ADP-IN)
  • Use connector set 2198-H040-AP-T for all following drives (if using H070 drive, use the 2198-H070-DP-T)
  • Line Filter and CB sizing is based off of the sum of the rms incoming current into the AC Sharing drives (see charts 9 and 10 to the left for CB and fuses).
